今見ている番組、NHKスペシャル「さまよえるがん患者」に家族が居ない老婆がターミナルケアができない病院に入院している。法律的に彼女を追い出すことができないが、受け取ってくれる病院が見つからない。そして、彼女は受け取ってくれる病院を待ちながら、静かになくなった。

最近、救急車で運ばれた人が次々病院に却下されて、そして番組で分かったのは、治療効果がないと判断されたがん患者は治療自体が否定される。

しかし、これは病院がひどいということではなく、日本の社会が高齢化しているから、資源が不足になってきた。

この番組を見ながら、「攻殻機動隊」というテレビアニメの第２シーズン「STAND ALONE COMPLEX Solid State Society」を思い出す。設定は日本社会の高齢化によって生きるために治療機械と常に繋がる必要のある老人が増加し、それは貴腐老人という。現在の技術で人間によるケアなしで治療を受けることができないが、もしそういう技術ができてしまったら未来はそのまま「攻殻機動隊」の世界になってしまう。

と思って上記の投稿を書いた。怖いですね。

I am right now watching an NHK special documentary “Cancer Refugees” about cancer victims who can’t find hospitals to take care of them. There is a terminally ill woman who has no relatives in the documentary who is accepted into a hospital that doesn’t have facilities to care the terminally ill, but the hospital is neither allowed to turn her away nor can they find another hospital to take her in. As she waits for someone to take her in, she passes quietly into the void.

Recently, there have been quite a few news stories about ambulances unable to find hospitals to take their patients. This documentary makes it clear that there are also cancer refugees in Japan, people who are turned away from hospitals when it is clear that their treatment is having no effect. Unable obtain treatment they move to another hospital, and so on and so on.

However, Japan’s hospitals are not as terrible as they seem. It’s simply that in a rapidly aging society, the health care infrastructure simply can’t keep up.

And all of this reminds me of an Sci-Fi anime called Ghost in the Shell. In the second season, S.A.C. Solid State Society, an aging Japanese takes center stage with terminally ill elderly people connected permanent to machines to stay alive at the center of the plot. Such technology does not exist right now, but it is quite imaginable to think that one day, in the apartments above us as we walk the streets, a lonely generation shut off from human contact could be lurking.

The possibilities of dehumanization offered by technology combined with the necessity of taking advantage of such technology…scary.

今日、自分のプロジェクト「山手線の散歩」を始めた。１日目は山手線目黒駅から池袋駅まで写真を撮りながら歩いてきた。撮った写真を動画にして下のYouTubeに載せた。6分間ちょっとかかるので、好きなところにスキップしていいよ。

万歩計には24468歩、596ギャラリー、12.23キロが記録された。
撮った写真は1442枚（徒歩の写真）以上。
かかった時間は５時間。

目黒～新宿は部分的に歩いたことがあるが、一気で歩くのが初めてだった。新宿～池袋の間ほとんど知らなくて何があるかすごく楽しみにしていた。しかし、感想は他の時書くね。このプロジェクトの元は毎年１日で全部歩く知り合いだった。彼は友達と一緒に東京駅から山手線沿いで都心をぐるっと回って約１２時間後また東京駅に着く。さすがにゆっくりしながらできないことです。今日目黒～池袋は２９駅内のたった９駅なのに５時間もかかった。３日間のプロジェクトにしては最初は結構いいペースだと思う。

さてこのビデオを見て、何が面白いと思うでしょう？

Today, I started my little project: “Yamanote Line Walking”. Day 1 took me from Meguro Station to Ikebukuro Station taking photos along the way, and turning those photos into a YouTube video. The video is a little over 6 minutes long, so if you get tired with one area skip to another.

My pedometer recorded 24468 steps burning 596 calories through the 12.23 kilometers walked.
I took 1442 walking photos and more.
This leg of the loop took 5 hours to complete.

I have walked from Meguro to Shinjuku before in parts, but never all at once. From Shinjuku to Ikebukuro, it was for the most part new to me, so I was quite interested what I would find. Those thoughts are for later though. The origin of this project was an acquaintance of mine who does this walk every year but all at once. With his friends, he walks from Tokyo Station right around central Tokyo following the Yamanote Line and ends back at Tokyo Station in some 12 hours. I couldn’t possible do that at my lethargic pace and taking photos too. Today, of the 29 stations on the line, I completed 9 in 5 hours. Not a bad pace for this 3 day project.

この間、「大人かわいい」というよくファッション誌に使われるキーワードを外国人に紹介するため、英語でブログ（http://tokuon.weblogs.jp）に投稿した。「大人かわいい」を紹介したと言っても本当に簡単にそういうコンセプトとトレンドがあるよという風に書いて、ウェブにある写真を載せた。その一枚の写真が「AneCan」と姉妹誌「CanCam」の看板モデル押切もえと海老原ゆりだった。よく考えたら彼女たちが着ていた服はおしゃれなワンピースとか。コジャレ？あれはカジュアル？カジュアルだから大人かわいい？一体何が大人かわいいだろう？と思った。

ファッション分野から離れさせていただく（←この日本語に自信ない）。一昨日の深夜ニュース番組を見ていろんなブログやホームページを読んだら、ファッションでは大人かわいいというのは、もとコギャル世代で現在の20代後半、30代前半辺りの女性が求めているスタイルです。この世代はコギャルから卒業したが、まだ自分の中で大人というものではない、まだ若い頃の可愛いらしさで居たい、まだカジュアルな服を普段の日常生活の中に着たい、と思っている。

コギャルと言ってもみんながコギャルではなかったかもしれないが、コギャルという現象がこの世代の代表的な象徴であれば、現在の大人かわいいというスタイルがこの世代の現在の正体です。

待って。そうでもないと思う。

反抗期に自分自身を探すために上の世代が定義した「普通」から解放されたくて自分自身の日本文化を造り上げたコギャルたちは、社会に混ざり込むため、派手で目立とうとしていることをやめて「大人」として「普通」になった。

その「普通」は周りの社会から見れば、ちょっと変わっている「普通」だが、認められているではないかと思う。「大人かわいい」は元コギャルだけではなく、同世代の女性にも求めているスタイルという説もある。

皆さん、どう思う？上記はあくまでも自分の目で見て、友人の意見を参考にして、考えた結論です。トレンドや社会現象を掴むのが難しい。

Ten years ago, girls in their teens to early twenty-somethings would circle Shibuya’s fashion mecha 109 building like schools of fish (kaiyuugyo 回遊魚). They were the kogyaru コギャル generation, and now they are breaking the 30 mark. They quickly became a symbol of the Japanese youth, and to the outside world, a symbol of crazy Japanese youth. Not everyone participated in the phenomenon, but they were representative of a generation searching for their own style and creating their own Japan.

Ten years later they are adults, although they don’t quite feel like adults. At least, they are not the adults their parents were. They still prefer to be casual, searching out the fashion items to piece together a wardrobe all their own.

Fashion magazines called these women and their fashion style otona-kawaii, meaning cute adult. (photo on left from a Rakuten online shop) Where as these women would have been showing more skin when they were younger, today, they still preserve their casual style but wear clothes that hide their aging bodies.

Whereas 10 years ago they were rebelling against the mainstream, today, they returned to the mainstream, although they have perhaps changed mainstream style in the process. Certainly the 30-year old women today do not dress like those ten or twenty years ago.

What I find extremely interesting is the fact that it seems that the term “Otona-kawaii” has spread beyond those who used to be kogyaru (i.e. became mainstream). Not only that, it seems to be spreading beyond the above definition as well, applying itself to a more general fashion space — a more sophisticated cute than those of younger twenty-somethings. It is still casual, yet there is a certain sense of “adult” sophistication.

I am no fashion expert, so you can safely assume that much of this simply confuses me, but these are my thoughts on this new word.

Anecan and sister magazine CanCam often use the term “otona-kawaii”, although their two main models, Oshikiri Moe and Ebihara Yuri don’t really match the above definition…hard to imagine them having been kogyaru.
